I think that the younger generation is pushed or forced to learn that genders are a choice and not a genetic certain. Having my views on this I think this is completely false and gender is completely genetic. Most Non-Binary people are in the stage of choosing their gender or at least don't feel like their current. Putting these points together I think that Non-Binary people are just confused individuals. There is also a point on whether people think that being Non-Binary or being different is "Cool". People might feel the urge to identify as Non-Binary because it gives them a reason to stand out and overall be noticed. Let's be honest a lot of LGBTQ+ people have or show signs of depression but it might not be "They're sad because they're Non-Binary" it might be "They're Non-Binary because they're sad." and they are just trying to be noticed. So in some states, it is a trend such as how they are only doing it to become "Cooler", noticed or to gain popularity. But I have to respect the fact that many people are happy just being Non-Binary and are genuinely what they say they are and not for attention or popularity reasons.
